Reasons to Ride

Daily commuting takes a toll on drivers’ health, vehicles and wallets, as well as impacting the environment. And as gas prices rise and the threat of global warming is becoming a greater concern, the cost of driving has never been higher.

  • Hydrocarbon emissions react in the presence of nitrogen oxides and sunlight to form ground-level ozone, our most widespread and intractable urban air pollution problem. EPA emissions report
  • In the past year, average gas prices in Texas have increased by more than 26%. May 2007 report by the Energy Information Administration
The Cost of Driving

A person driving between Sugar Land and Greenway Plaza/Uptown Galleria twice every work day has a monthly driving cost of approximately $400.

A vanpool or TREKEXPRESS bus passenger can make the same commute for just $80 a month.

These figures were calculated using AAA’s cost-per-mile estimate of 52.2 cents, which figures in average fuel, routine maintenance, tires, insurance, license and registration, loan finance charges and depreciation costs for an automobile that is driven 15,000 miles per year. These estimates assume a 25 mpg rating for the commuter’s vehicle, no parking costs, an average of 20 workdays per month and a cost of $2.70 per gallon gasoline. The estimates exclude loan payment.
